With 2020 being a pivotal point in history for several reasons, we’ve also seen a number of Horror and thriller films with black leads become more prevalent over the past couple years. With the likes of Get Out, Antebellum and next year’s remake of Candy Man, the genre seems to bee in good hands!
With that being said, we’ve decided to put together a list of black horror and thriller films to be aware of. Note, these all aren’t great, scary or thrilling but we want to help you binge on black horror and Spooky season is about to reach its Peak!
All This week we will be doing short lists of films with blacks, past, current and future in the horror genre. Ready? Here we go.
Attack the Block
The majority of us became familiar with John Boyega in his break out role in the famous Star Wars saga. But some became familiar with him from this project. Attack the block is a story of a group of South London teens that get involved in defending their city from an alien species crash landing and killing the residents.
Get Out
Making an immediate culture impact for several reasons, Get Out is easily one of the top films featured in this series. The Jordan Peele directed movies tells the story of a black man visiting his white girlfriend’s home town for the first time and finding out there are some deadly secrets that she’s been hiding from him. With the attachment of Childish Gambino’s “Redbone”, the star power of Daniel Kaluuya and the interesting mind of Mr. Peele; this film will have an impact on the genre for a long time to come.
Don’t Let Go
This movie is a little different than the other films featured today. David Oyelowo plays the role of young superstar Storm Reid’s character’s uncle in a story that involves time, death and more!
Bones
It may be a little known fact that Snoop is a fan of the horror genre movie. This is probably one of the more popular horror films he starred in.
Little Monsters
Lupita Nyong’o is no stranger to the genre either. This may not be as popular as the other movie we’re gonna reveal later in our list but this one may provide a few more laughs. In Little Monsters, she stars as a grade school teacher who has to navigate through a zombie apocalypse while making sure her students stay alive too!
